A year after a horror crash, Kristof Ramon is putting the misery behind him – CyclingTips

If you’ve spent any time at CyclingTips you’ll be well familiar with Belgian photographer Kristof Ramon. Kristof is a long-time contributor to CyclingTips and is responsible for many of the incredible photos we’ve published over the last decade (here’s just one of countless wonderful galleries he’s helped us create.)

2020 was a tough year for Kristof, not just because of COVID-19, but because of a nasty car accident in January while shooting in Spain with Deceuninck-QuickStep. I’ll let Kristof tell the story in his own words in a moment, but suffice to say the crash knocked him around a bit. The car ended up on its roof and Kristof was left with multiple facial fractures and a long road to recovery.

Here’s what Kristof posted on Facebook at the time:

Kristof had a tough time of it in the period after the crash. “The following weeks were nothing short of horrific as I got operated on to reconstruct my multi-fractured face,” he wrote. “I never felt so helpless in my life.”

This photo was taken a week after Kristof’s accident.

As the world began to suffer through the coronavirus pandemic, Kristof started to recover. And as you can see in the video at the top of this post, he found himself falling back in love with riding and got himself fitter than ever before.

And then, earlier this week – exactly a year on from his accident – Kristof returned to the site of the crash. “I was able to ride up the Coll de Rates on my bike and put all that misery symbolically behind me,” he wrote on Facebook. “That was an absolute highlight moment I was looking forward to for some time now.”

Here’s Kristof’s Facebook post in its entirety:

It’s no secret that we’re big Kristof Ramon fans here at CyclingTips. He’s not just a brilliant photographer; he’s also a great guy and a pleasure to work with. We have no idea how long Kristof’s ride was or how fast he climbed the Coll de Rates this week but it doesn’t matter in the slightest. We’re just glad he made a full recovery and that he was able to put some demons to rest this week.
