Embattled war veteran Ben Roberts-Smith has debuted his new girlfriend Sarah Matulin at the glamorous Magic Millions race day, after splitting from his wife.
Despite fighting allegations of war crimes and pursuing defamation action through the Federal Court, the decorated soldier turned businessman appeared cheerful as he posed for pictures with Ms Matulin at the Gold Coast event on Saturday.
Mr Roberts-Smith has denied any wrongdoing during his time in Afghanistan or Iraq.
Saturday’s event marks the first time Mr Roberts-Smith has publicly confirmed his relationship with the PR guru.
Ms Matulin used to work at Channel 7 in Queensland – where Mr Roberts-Smith works as a general manager – until moving to Ruby PR.
The fashionable pair were snapped smiling and holding hands through the day as they enjoyed the races from the Horizon Enclosure party.
Mr Roberts-Smith’s new relationship comes after finalising the split with his former wife, Emma, earlier this month.
Their former country mansion, nestled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, sold for more than $2 million in December.
Mr Roberts-Smith has come under fire for his alleged links to some of the alleged war crimes identified by Inspector-General of the Australian Defence, the Courier Mail reports.
The Inspector-General’s report, released late last year, found credible information of an alleged 39 unlawful killings by special forces soldiers in Afghanistan, mostly by the SAS.
Mr Roberts-Smith has been linked to some of these alleged killings but has denied any wrongdoing.
He has also launched defamation action against Channel 9 over their reports linking him to war crimes.
