Deves won’t ‘beat’ Zali Steggall but ‘feeling’ is she’ll have an effect in other seats

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says Katherine Deves won’t beat independent candidate for Warringah Zali Steggall, but the “feeling” is the Liberal candidate could have an effect in other seats.

Ms Deves has created division within the Liberal Party over her social media posts about transgender people after MPs called on the Warringah candidate to be disendorsed.

The Liberal candidate for Warringah is being backed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who defended his decision to not disendorse Ms Deves.

“I think the government sees this issue as to their advantage; they’re saying they’ll be tougher on transgender women in sport,” Mr Clennell said.

“Scott Morrison is determined to defend Katherine Deves.

“The press conference today was really a bit of a bun fight.”
