A young mother is fighting for life after she was allegedly strangled by her former partner at a Gold Coast hotel in an incident that triggered a child abduction alert.
The woman’s 34-year-old ex-partner will appear in a Brisbane court on Monday after being charged with a string of domestic violence offences.
The man from Logan, south of Brisbane, has been charged with grievous bodily harm and strangulation following the incident at the Meriton Suites Southport on the Gold Coast.
The 25-year-old woman was found unconscious by paramedics after two neighbours called triple-0 when they heard a cry for help coming from the unit about 5pm on Saturday.
Before police arrived, it is alleged the man left with his 11-month-old son, prompting an amber alert to be issued due to concerns for the child’s welfare.
Police said on Sunday that the man and woman were the child’s parents but were living apart.
The child was handed to officers at Crestmead Police Station shortly after midnight by two women known to the man.
The child is described as being safe.
However, the woman remains in a critical condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after the child was handed in to police, the man was spotted near the Oxley Motor Inn in south western Brisbane.
“The male person was located in proximity to the Oxley Motor Inn, he ran from the scene and a foot chase took place,” Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said.
“With the assistance of the police dog squad, we were able to apprehend that person.”
It is alleged that the man ran from the scene into an industrial district but was arrested soon after.
He has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and one count of strangulation and is due to appear in Richlands Magistrates Court on Monday.
“The young woman has been undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at the Gold Coast University Hospital,” Insp Ahearn said.
“Her condition is described as serious and we hope she does make a full recovery.”
Police said the cries for help were from a male person and they are trying to piece together what happened inside the apartment.
Officers have established crime scenes at the Gold Coast hotel suite, the Oxley Motor Inn and are also examining the man’s car.
