Utah Officials Charge Man for Assault and Carrying a Weapon on an Aircraft

A Utah man accused of holding a straight-edge razor near another passenger’s throat on a flight from New York City to Salt Lake City was charged with assault on November 22, authorities said. According to the US Attorney’s Office, District of Utah, the man, identified as 41-year-old Merrill Darrell Fackrell, was charged with carrying a weapon on an aircraft and assault with a dangerous weapon in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. The statement said Fackrell “placed his hand in front of the woman’s screen and told her to pause her movie,” prompting her to take off her headphones. She then realized Fackrell had what appeared to be a knife in his hand inches from her neck area and tried to escape by lunging into the aisle, but Fackrell tried to stop her by grabbing her shoulder. The object was secured and later identified as a Facon “wood-handled straight edge razor with a one-to-two-inch blade,” according to the statement. Footage captured by passenger Abraham Niederhauser shows police walking through the plane. Niederhauser told Storyful he was two seats behind the suspect and noticed he had something in his hand when he stood up. Niederhauser added that the situation occurred mid-flight and that the police were waiting for the suspect once they landed. Credit: Abraham Niederhauser via Storyful
