Viral dancing video seen as ‘symbol of defiance’ against Iranian regime

Sky News host Chris Kenny says a young Iranian couple’s social media post has been seen as a “symbol of defiance” against the country’s regime and led to the pair being imprisoned for over a decade.

The video shared on social media in November shows Astiyazh Haghighi dancing without a headscarf with her fiancé, Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, in front of the Azadi tower.

The pair have since been sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison.

“In this response, we see the nature of the Shia Islamist regime and the way it is cracking down on its population, on women in particular over the need to wear headscarves, really on the need to be subservient,” Mr Kenny said.
