A 14-year-old boy was killed and a 15-year-old friend suffered serious injuries in a horrifying collision Sunday afternoon in Ottawa’s rural south end.

Ottawa police said three youths on dirt bikes were travelling north on Munster Road when two of them collided with a van that was heading east on Franktown Road.

The crash occurred at about 4 p.m. The injuries to the 15-year-old, also a male, were not life-threatening, police said.

The intersection is marked by a flashing amber light on Franktown Road and a flashing red light on Munster, which is controlled by stop signs. The speed limit on both roads is 80 km/h.

The intersection was closed for more than seven hours after the collision, not reopening until 11:40 p.m. The crash is being investigated by the Ottawa police collision investigation unit.
