The owner of an Elgin Street bakery says she has been astounded by an outpouring of public support after being robbed twice in the span of one week.

It was not the first time that the Brown Loaf Bakery has been robbed, the owner said in an interview Friday, but the proximity of the robberies and the fact they were allegedly committed by the same person has filled her with fear.

“We do not feel safe,” said the owner, who asked not to be named or photographed because she feared the man who she says stole from her store.

“This is very bad. It’s not the first time, it’s the second time. It’s very weird.”

Both times, the man, who she described as wearing clean clothes, entered the bakery and posed as if he was going to buy something. But, suddenly, the owner said, he has asked for money.

She did not want to provide more details about the robberies, but noted the man had not used violence.

It is the nature of the alleged robberies and the man’s demeanour — the audacity that the perpetrator had struck both on Wednesday and one week earlier — that have struck her as “creepy” and distinguished these thefts from others.

Police have been contacted and are investigating, the owner said. The Ottawa Police Service did not respond to questions about the robberies on Friday.

As news of the robberies spread by word of mouth and on social media, community members have reached out to help.

“People are very supportive,” the owner said. “They’ll come and donate money and ask us how we’re doing. They are very nice, very supportive.”

Clients and neighbours have come by the bakery, donated money and offered to do what they can to help the owners, who, like other restaurants and shops in the area, had to contend with a revitalization project in 2019-20 that turned a large part of Elgin Street into a construction zone.

The community response has uplifted the bakery owner.

“It’s very great,” she said. “Very helpful.”
