Police confirm fatality following smokey fire in small Gatineau apartment building

One person is dead following a smokey fire early Sunday in a small apartment building in Gatineau’s Hull sector.

Firefighters were called to the five-unit building at 4 Frontenac St. at about 4:30 a.m.
When they arrived, the building was full of dense smoke, but they were able to contain the blaze in less than an hour.
First responders found a person unconscious inside the one of the units.
Paramedics attempted resuscitation, but without success. The victim was pronounced dead at Hull Hospital.
Gatineau police said Sunday morning that investigators remain on the scene and they had no further details.
Seven other people have been displaced by the fire. It’s not known whether they will be allowed to return.
In their first report on the blaze, Gatineau fire noted that they found no smoke alarms in the building.
