Former Mets minor leaguer Andrew Church appears to take shot at Tim Tebow after being released by team

Around Major League Baseball, teams released several minor leaguers this week in an attempt to save money amid the stoppage brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. One of those players that was let go was Andrew Church, a pitcher in the New York Mets organization.

Following his release, Church took to Instagram to reveal his thoughts on the heart-wrenching decision. In doing so, Church appeared to take a shot at former NFL quarterback and current Mets minor league outfielder Tim Tebow. While Church didn’t refer to Tebow by name, the pitcher mentioned a certain “celebrity” that was signed by the Mets in 2016 that “made a mockery” of the team.

“(The Mets) made a mockery of our team by putting a celebrity on it to sell more tickets,” Church wrote. “I saw players lose their jobs because of it. We weren’t playing to win, we were playing to make everyone else money. Not the players. We never saw a cut. Well, allegedly that one player did. I think people are starting to understand that more now but they didn’t in 2018 when it was happening again. I was fed up.”

Church, who was a second-round draft pick of the Mets in 2013, didn’t call out the decision at the time “out of respect for the organization.” Now with his release, the 25-year old pitcher isn’t keeping his thoughts to himself. In seven years in the system, Church compiled a 4.83 ERA in 454 innings pitched.

Since his baseball career began in 2017, Tebow has had multiple stops throughout the Mets organization including Port St. Lucie (Class A), Binghamton (AA), and Syracuse (AAA). Tebow spent the 2019 season with Syracuse and was viewed as a marquee attraction.

Tebow owns a .223 batting average to go along with 18 home runs and 107 RBIs over the course of his three-year minor league career. However, the former Denver Broncos quarterback has also struck out 327 times.
