MLB draft: Yankees pick Austin Wells and his family go wild after first-round selection

Watch Now:
Yankees Select Austin Wells At No. 28

Despite milieu and appearances, the Party People you’re about to witness are not in a state of jubilation over a NASDAQ session high. Rather, the good times have been given clearance to roll because one of their own has been drafted and implicitly promised redeemable U.S. currency by the Yankees of New York:

Draft night rumpus room or a Men’s Wearhouse with an open bar and prices you can appreciate? Yes.

In any event, that’s Austin Wells, backed by thrones of the finest Corinthian leather and throngs of well wishing yacht rockers who have risen from them. Wells is a University of Arizona catcher who’s been tabbed by the aforementioned Yankees as the No. 28 overall pick of the 2020 MLB draft. As the color television footage above reveals, Monsieur Wells was not displeased by this turn of events.

Here’s what our own R.J. Anderson wrote about Wells when he ranked him as the 26th-best prospect in the 2020 draft class:

Wells’ standing is tied to a team’s belief that he can catch. As it is, his bat is doing the heavy lifting. A draft-eligible sophomore, he hit .357/.476/.560 with seven home runs and more walks than strikeouts in 71 games with the Wildcats. (He also had a strong showing in the Cape Cod League, batting .308/.389/.526, albeit with a higher K rate.) Wells has a pretty swing from the left side, and he has a chance to further tap into his power. The risk is, as suggested, with his defense. He has a substandard arm, and he doesn’t grade as a good receiver. He could end up at the other end of the defensive spectrum, either at first base or in the outfield; alternatively, he could benefit more than any other draftee from robot umpires. Who knows in this economy.

And here’s what from Yankees scouting veep Damon Oppenheimer said after selecting Wells:

“We are very happy to get Austin Wells today. We thought he was one of the top hit and power combinations in the draft. We love his desire and makeup, along with his athleticism. We have known him for years and seen him progress quite a bit behind the plate to allow us to believe he can be an impact guy.”

Also please note that the Yankees are already refusing to acknowledge his beard:

No, that beard probably won’t be with him for much longer, but Wednesday night, which Austin Wells and his whooping confreres effectively turned into 100 Saturday nights, always shall.
