DeMarcus Cousins to sign 10-day contract with Denver Nuggets, per report

DeMarcus Cousins is signing a 10-day contract with the Denver Nuggets, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN on Friday. The veteran big man was not signed by a team when the season began, but inked a non-guaranteed deal with the Milwaukee Bucks that had him play 17 games for the defending champions. He was eventually waived, but Bucks general manager Jon Horst praised him for his performance while he was in Milwaukee.

“We wouldn’t have been able to get through this difficult stretch of the season as successfully as we did without DeMarcus,” Horst told ESPN after the Bucks waived Cousins. “At the end of the day, we made a strategic decision to have an open roster spot, but there’s nothing that would prevent us from partnering with DeMarcus again down the road. He was so good for us, and hopefully we helped him, too.”

Now Cousins will join a Nuggets team that has had limited depth all season. Both Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. are out with serious injuries, and the bench has largely been devoid of traditional big men. After trading prospect Bol Bol, Denver’s roster had grown even more perimeter-heavy than it already was, and now that JaMychal Green is in the health and safety protocols, Denver sorely needed someone to fill minutes in the frontcourt.

That will seemingly be Cousins. In theory, he should provide some offensive punch from the backup center spot, but he shot below 47 percent from the field in Milwaukee while making just 13 of his 48 3-point attempts. If he’s going to help keep the Nuggets afloat when Nikola Jokic goes to the bench, he’s going to have to look more like the player he was for the Los Angeles Clippers a season ago. Physically, he is too far removed from his glory days as a Sacramento Kings All-Star to recapture that form, but if he can make shots, he should be a worthwhile short-term addition for the Nuggets.
