Why the Celtics can cover

While one game doesn’t always tell the full story, the Celtics played quite well in the season opener, especially offensively. Boston was also a top-five offense on a per-possessions basis last season, ranking sixth in the NBA in turnover rate (13.6 percent) and fifth in the NBA in offensive rebound rate (27.1). Jayson Tatum, who scored 30 points in the opener, averaged 23.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, making the leap to superstardom.

Jaylen Brown exploded for 33 points against Milwaukee, following up on a season in which he averaged 20.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. Defensively, Boston will have its hands full with a dynamic Brooklyn offense, but the Celtics were fourth in the NBA in shooting efficiency allowed and sixth in the league in defensive turnover rate in 2019-20.

Why the Nets can cover

Brooklyn projects as an elite offensive team, and that was on display in the team’s first contest against the Warriors. In addition to a combined 48 points in 50 minutes from Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets produced a 58.9 percent true shooting mark that included 15-of-35 from 3-point range. Durant missed the entire 2019-20 season with an Achilles injury but, in 2018-19, he averaged 26.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, and he is a proven offensive force when healthy.

Irving was electric in 20 games last season, putting up 27.4 points, 6.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game, and the Nets have great offensive pieces in support, headlined by Joe Harris, Spencer Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert

The Celtics are a quality defensive team but, in 2019-20, Boston was below-average on the defensive glass, allowing opponents to grab 25.6 percent of their own rebounds. Considering Brooklyn was a top-10 offensive rebounding team in its own right, that is an area of potential interest for the Nets. For good measure, the Nets should be able to get to the free throw line, with the Celtics operating as a bottom-10 team in free throw rate allowed last season.
