Alphonso Davies sidelined for Bayern Munich with COVID-19 complications, could miss Canada-USMNT match

Alphonso Davies has been in the middle of another stellar season for Bayern Munich but things are now on pause due to his recovery from Covid. After originally testing positive on January 5th, Davies along with five other members of the team had to isolate before returning to first team training on Wednesday.

Upon receiving an examination when returning, Davies was diagnosed with mild myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart.  While it is not expected to be a danger to Davies long term, he won’t be available for training during the next few weeks. Speaking on things, Julian Nagelsmann said,

“This myocarditis isn’t too dramatic based on the ultrasound, but more simply signs of an inflammation. Nevertheless, it needs to heal and that will no doubt take some time.” Continuing about the other players who were isolating, Nagelsmann also expects to be short-handed versus Koln on Saturday, “None of them are 100% fit. One or two had symptoms as well. Upamecano, Tanguy, Leroy, Omar, and Manu and back in the squad, but apart from Manu, none of them are ready to start or play a reasonable amount of minutes.”

Canadian coach John Herdman will also be worrying about this diagnosis with critical World Cup qualifiers on the horizon for Canada. They’ll face Honduras (Jan. 27), The United States (Jan. 30), and El Salvador (Feb. 2), and not having Davies at full fitness will be quite the blow for the side as they sit atop the Octagonal.
