Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that talented winger Leroy Sane rejected the club’s latest contract offer and will leave the club this summer assuming they receive a sufficient offer or at the end of his contract when it expires in the summer of 2021. The 24-year-old German international hasn’t played since August 2019 when he suffered a torn ACL and faced an uphill battle to become a regular starter despite now being fit.

“Leroy said he doesn’t want to extend the contract so it means he wants to leave and it is going to happen this summer or when he is out of contract,” Guardiola said during Friday’s press conference. “The club have talked to me, they’ve offered two or three times to extend his contract, he rejected so it means he wants to play in another club. If at the end of this season we arrive at an agreement with another club, he is going to leave. If not he will stay one more year and leave when out of contract.”

Sane has been constantly linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and a move makes perfect sense for both parties. City wants to get rid of a player that no longer fits into their plans and doesn’t want to be there, while Sane is in search of consistent minutes. Sane shined in the 2017-18 season with 14 goals and following it up with 16 in the following season, though his role slowly started to shift towards more of a bench player. This season he has played in just one match due to the injury.

For City, it would be nice to keep a player with such potential, but the club has no shortage of options in attack with Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and others.

Sane was surprisingly left off of Germany’s 2018 World Cup roster but has averaged double digit goals across the last four seasons. He joined City in 2016 from German side Schalke.
