All You Need To Know About High Bay Lights

When a large interior space is to be lit, high beam lighting is usually sufficient. Think of areas like manufacturing facilities, gyms, department stores, factories, and more; These facilities are generally huge and take up a lot of vertical and horizontal space. This requires intense lighting to provide the correct standing candle levels for adequate lighting. High Bay lights are mostly hang from the ceiling via hooks, chains, or they can be mounted directly. These lights are most commonly used for warehouse high bay lighting.

Various industries and facilities require high bay lighting. Some of the most common are:

  • Department stores
  • Industrial plant
  • Production facilities
  • Schools and colleges
  • Municipal facilities such as town halls or leisure centers
  • Commercial applications such as department stores

Significance of LED high bay lighting

Historically, various lighting technologies have been (and are) used in warehouses and industrial environments. Metal halides (MH), high-pressure sodium (HPS), and fluorescent lights are the most common. However, industrial LED lights have comparatively better performance.

Industrial LED lighting vs. Metal Halide High Bay Light: MH lamps are standard in sports and storage / industrial uses (as well as in any environment requiring illumination of gigantic spaces). The advantages of MH lighting include decent color rendering and relatively good spotlight levels (unlike other types of conventional bulbs). Some of their main drawbacks are long warm-up times (sometimes 15-30 minutes) and high maintenance costs, and their default characteristics include flickering. Moreover, a lot of energy is wasted in the form of heat.

Industrial LED lighting vs. Fluorescent Lighting: Fluorescent lights are sometimes used in warehouses or industrial applications. The advantages of fluorescent lighting include lower start-up costs and relatively high efficiency. The downsides include the presence of toxic mercury (which requires specific waste disposal procedures), a shorter lifespan when turned on and off, and a ballast to stabilize the light.

Benefits of LED lighting technology

It’s no secret that LED lighting technology has outpaced the capabilities of conventional lighting in fundamental ways. Following are the general benefits of using LED high bay lights:

It requires less maintenance. Maintenance is a critical consideration when it comes to industrial or warehouse lighting. Use of common lights can often lead to additional maintenance or equipment costs. Again, the longevity of industrial LED lighting means that fixtures need to be replaced much less frequently, which means savings for your bottom line.

Improved quality of light. Industrial LED lighting and tall lamps will generally outperform in comparison to most other lamps for color rendering index (CRI), correlated color temperature (CCT), and standing candles. CRI is a measure of the ability of a lamp to reveal the actual color of objects with an ideal light source (natural light). LED lighting works very well on all three fronts.

Greater energy efficiency. LED lamps generate light differently; they distribute light differently than conventional lighting solutions, resulting in less energy required to deliver the same performance. How does it work? First, many traditional light bulbs waste much of the energy they produce by releasing it as heat. Second, most conventional bulbs are Omnidirectional, which means the light output is 360 degrees. Industrial LED lighting for applications requiring high bay lighting eliminates energy waste.
