Austrian Airlines Resumes Non-Stop Los Angeles Flights

Austrian Airlines has relaunched its nonstop service between Vienna and Los Angeles after almost three years away. The carrier operated its first flight yesterday and will up its frequency in July to six weekly flights.

Austrian Airlines returns to Los Angeles

On May 20th, Austrian Airlines restarted operations between Vienna (VIE) and Los Angeles (LAX) with five weekly flights. The inaugural flight (OS 081) departed Vienna International Airport at 10:06 and arrived at Los Angeles International Airport at 13:04.

The airline will initially offer five flights a week, with flights departing on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The flight schedule is as follows:

Austrian Airlines CCO, Michael Trestl, said,

“With Chicago, Washington and two airports in New York, we are already very well represented in the East of the USA. We are very happy to offer non-stop flights to the West Coast again with our route to Los Angeles.”

The Austrian carrier last flew to Los Angeles over the summer of 2019 and carried over 110,000 passengers that year. This service will be seasonal and conclude on October 15th.

Passengers on yesterday’s inaugural flight were given a Hollywood-themed sendoff featuring Madame Tussauds wax figures. The likes of Sandra Bullock, Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Schwarzenegger awaited guests in the recently opened Pier East.

Julian Jäger, CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, said,

“Directly from Vienna to the popular Hollywood metropolis: Los Angeles is a great city and the perfect starting point to travel the West Coast of the USA. Flights to the United States are generally very popular and I am pleased that after two years of the pandemic, the flight schedule is now being expanded again to include five frequencies per week to Los Angeles in addition to New York, Newark, Chicago and Washington.”

The airline will deploy its fleet of Boeing 777-200ER aircraft on this route. Austrian’s 777-200ERs offer 306 seats in three classes: 38 in business class, 24 in premium economy and 244 in economy.

Six flights a week from July

Austrian Airlines will add another frequency on this route from the beginning of July, taking its offering to six weekly flights. The additional flight will operate on Wednesdays and remain on the schedule until the end of September.

The airline anticipates plenty of demand on this route, with a blend of leisure travelers and transit passengers excepted to fill seats.

According to Michael Trestl,

“The million-strong metropolis of Los Angeles is a popular holiday destination for many Austrians and a hub for connections with our partners. With our new destination, we are expecting a balanced amount of local and transfer passengers, who will connect in Vienna.”

Over 30 weekly flights to the US

Austrian Airlines is set to offer up to 34 weekly flights to the US this summer, putting the airline at 96.75% of its 2019 levels.

Trestl added,

“The time of hitting the ground running has come. After two years of COVID-related restrictions, we are taking off again into a very well booked summer with an extended European route network, as well as attractive oversea-connections with increased frequencies.”

Along with its service to Los Angeles, Austrian Airlines also operates daily direct flights to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Washington Dulles (IAD), New York (JFK) and Newark (ERW).
