The PGA Championship is an annual men’s golf event on the PGA tour and one of the four major tournaments currently played in the sport. The others include the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the Open Championship, which each take place during the summer months on the professional calendar.

This year, fans are in for a special treat for more than a few reasons, considering unique factors such as venue, golfers, and more. Here we take a look at why the 2021 PGA Championship is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated golf events of the year.

The Competition is Hot

Last year, American viewers and golf enthusiasts abroad watched as 23-year-old Collin Morikawa managed to win it all at TPC Harding Park, beating out both runners up, Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey. Fans were stunned as the young golfer defeated the two veteran athletes, both of who have a long list of accolades.

As the tournament quickly approaches again, supporters can look forward to competition that is just as fiery, as Johnson seeks to gain the prestigious title. However, some other elite golfers are also up for the fight, such as 2019 champion Brooks Koepka and defending U.S. Open victor Bryson Dechambeau.

As the event draws near, expert pundits are serving up the latest Golf Picks for every match on the tour, so fans never miss a beat. One thing’s for certain: with such a large group of talent set to meet all together, this year’s faceoff is bound to be a heated one for the books.

It’s Being Hosted on One of Golf’s Most Gorgeous Courses

Each year the PGA Championship is hosted on a different course than the one before it. Traditionally, it’s held in the eastern part of the United States and has only gone west 11 times since its establishment all the way back in 1916.

2021 will see the event take place at the gorgeous, southern setting of Kiawah Island in South Carolina. This celebrated course sits in close proximity to the charming town of Charleston, and contains a stunning private beach home to a host of wildlife and marsh greenery.

The island’s premier golf club, Ocean Course, will host the tournament and welcome a limited number of fans to attend the event live. Kiawah has been home to a number of prestigious championships in the golf world, from the Ryder Cup to the World Cup and several PGA tour events. Tickets are now on sale for those enthusiastic supporters looking to watch world-class golfers compete in a series of four rounds in this beautiful location.

It Will Be Held in May Instead of August

For a long time, the PGA Championship was played in August, but starting in 2019 the tournament saw a change of schedule that pushed it up a few months into the springtime. This change is not only helpful for the golfer’s performance, but also for fans who are eager to see the matches live.

Especially in the southern U.S., where August means scorching hot temperatures, the switch to play in May means that supporters and athletes can enjoy the cool spring breeze without breaking out in a sweat. Because weather does have a great bearing on professional sporting events, and considering that golf is an outside activity, people have welcomed the change with great enthusiasm.

This year’s tournament will take place the weekend before Memorial Day, Thursday May 20th to Sunday May 23rd. If you can’t manage to make it in person, the championship will be hosted live on television on ESPN and CBS. Take advantage of the event and host a watch party with friends at home. Create a tasty seasonal BBQ menu and fire up the grill to prepare a delicious feast for your guests as you watch the action.
