SkyTeam Launches Its 1st Branded South American Lounge

SkyTeam has opened the doors of its first lounge in South America, located in the recently inaugurated Terminal 2 at Santiago de Chile’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL). Passengers from the five member airlines flying to this hub will be able to benefit from this new lounge. Let’s investigate further.

A new lounge

Santiago de Chile’s airport inaugurated its new international Terminal 2 earlier this year. The Terminal has slowly been opening its amenities, including LATAM’s newest lounge, which we toured last month.

Now SkyTeam has inaugurated its latest branded lounge, a 757 square meters facility available to international Elite Plus, First, and Business Class customers.

SkyTeam’s Santiago lounge is open from three hours prior to the first flight until the last SkyTeam flight of the day departs. Santiago International Airport is served by five member airlines, including Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air France, Delta Air Lines, and KLM.

This lounge is located on the first floor of the airport’s Terminal 2, in Pier E. It features design elements that pay homage to Chile’s cultural heritage, as well as custom designed seating with charging points, showers, free WiFi, and other amenities.

Kristin Colvile, SkyTeam CEO, said,

“As international travel returns, we’re excited to enhance the customer experience by adding another lounge to our global network. We’ve combined the warmth of Chilean hospitality with elements of the country’s delicious cuisine to offer a welcoming space for customers to enjoy before they fly.”

Customers will have access to a buffet selection with several options available, from international food to freshly prepared Chilean empanadas, said SkyTeam in a statement.

SkyTeam operations in Santiago de Chile

According to data provided by Cirium, SkyTeam members operate around 43 flights to Santiago de Chile in May 2022. They haven’t fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, still 25.9% down in terms of weekly flights and 21.6% down in terms of capacity.

Air France currently operates five flights per week between Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and Santiago de Chile. The airline employs its Airbus A350-900 fleet on this route.

Aeromexico flies daily to Santiago from Mexico City, onboard its Boeing 787-8 fleet.

Aerolíneas Argentinas offers up to 17 weekly flights between Buenos Aires’ Jorge Newbery Airfield (AEP) onboard its Boeing 737 fleet. The Argentinian state carrier also offers one weekly flight from Mendoza to Santiago, employing its Embraer E190 jetliners.

Delta Air Lines flies daily from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International, employing its Airbus A330-300 fleet.

Finally, KLM flies six times a week (only Thursdays remain without flights), employing its Boeing 787-9 fleet. Last month, KLM fully offset a long-haul flight on this route, contributing to the “CO2OL Tropical Mix”. This is a reforestation project in three provinces in Panama, which KLM has supported for several years.

Reopening the Sydney lounge

Later this year, SkyTeam will reopen its Sydney lounge in Australia. Once it reopens, it will have a brand new look, following remodeling and enhancements that are currently taking place.

SkyTeam first opened the Sydney lounge back in 2015. It is accessible for customers flying with China Airlines, China Eastern, Delta, Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, and XiamenAir.
