TSA Lowers PreCheck Application Fee To $78

The United States Transportation Security Administration has lowered the price for TSA PreCheck from $85 to $78.

Lower fees for PreCheck

Though most prices in the United States have increased lately, the Transportation Security Administration has lowered some of its fees. The lastest fee to be reduced is the application price for first time applications to the PreCheck program. From $85 to $78 seems like a small difference, but it is an 8% decrease, perhaps quite unexpected.

In September 2021, the TSA lowered the online renewal fee by $15, from $85 to $70. The in-person renewal price remained the same, $85. Today, the TSA announced that the in-person renewal fee will be lowered to match the $78 new applicant fee, and that the online renewal fee will remain at $70.

Once a traveler is approved by the TSA, eligibility lasts for five years.

Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

The best way to get TSA PreCheck is by enrolling in Global Entry, also a Trusted Traveler Program, which enables passengers to go through an exclusive line when entering the United States upon return from an international trip.

Global Entry has a fee of $100 for a five-year membership and includes TSA PreCheck. Even for those who rarely travel internationally, it is worth enrolling in both programs. It is important to note that if one enrolls in PreCheck and then Global Entry, the full fee for both programs will need to be paid.

Although Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, the program is managed by the United States Customs and Border Protection. Those approved for both programs receive Known Traveler Numbers (KTN) allowing access to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.
