U.S. leads in Olympic medal count through 5 days

Here are the latest medal results from the 2024 Paris Games, as of July 31. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, the U.S. won the most medals overall, with 113, and the most gold medals, with 39.

Paris Games medal count through 7/31

Yesterday, Katie Ledecky won her first gold medal of the Paris Games and eighth overall in the 1500m freestyle. NBC’s Elizabeth Beisel during the race said, “Not only does Katie Ledecky need this gold, but Team USA needs this gold.” NBC’s Dan Hicks noted USA Swimming “only has two golds thus far, and there’s been only one individual gold medal” — Torri Huske’s win in the 100m butterfly. Hicks; “Katie Ledecky comes around at the right time when the U.S. team kind of needs a golden boost.” Beisel said, “You’d be surprised how much this boost … will echo throughout the entire team. This is exactly what they need, get the morale up” (NBC, 7/31).

Meanwhile, the London Telegraph took issue with how the U.S. largely reports the overall medal count, noting that their “friends across the pond have always done things their own way when it comes to Olympic medal tables, ignoring the convention used by the [IOC] , which bases it on the number of golds the athletes from a country have earned, rather than the total number of medals won.” The U.S. has had an “underwhelming start to the Games,” thought there is “still time for Team USA to make up ground” — Simone Biles is set to star in the individual women’s gymnastics events, and the U.S. “will inevitably pick up some much-needed bling in athletics” (London TELEGRAPH, 7/31).
